@iamwill comments on hip hops currents are valid but could his music catalogue make him out to be a hypocrite?

Under the radar Black Eye Peas have released a new project called “Masters Of The Sun Vol. 1. Music more political like their really early albums. Now minus songstress Fergie.

While being interviewed by the Rolling Stone, Frontman Will i am was asked about his feelings towards the current state of hip hop.

He wasn’t too positive.

Saying the problem facing hip hop music is it’s too easy. Comparing it to low hanging fruit. No deep messages or complex skill is no longer involved.

He has a point, in the mainstream this is very true as many have said in the past. Will i am is speaking facts that many would agree with.

But…..

When you look at his music catalogue with the BEP and his solo material. The same things he’s against he somewhat contributed to them.

Before Fergie joined the group, they were very alternative. More old school in soundscape. But after Fergie joined that changed over time.

It could be argued that BEP were more pop than actual rap.

Would you call “My Humps” complex deep music? Or “Let’s Get It Started” How about “Boom Boom Pow” “Meet Me Halfway even?

His catalogue is very pop & mainstream. While brilliantly done, isn’t as pure hip hop as Will claims other current hip hop artist don’t do.

On a lyrical level, Will in his early materiel was above average in my eye. But nothing outstanding and arguably was worse during his late solo run.

Song’s from his #willpower album won’t impress hardcore hip hop fans and was forgettable by critics. Singles like “Scream & Shout” are covered in auto tune and forgettable lyrics.

As I’ve said. I fully agree with his comments. But when you break down what he’s saying and his actual output (until BEP’s recent album) his message could get lost under the hypocrisy.

Not saying artist can’t change over time, but for how hard he was with his words, many would wish he had this same stance when BEP were arguably the biggest group in the world.
